Archer Aviation Inc. and Soracle Corporation, a joint venture by Japan Airlines and Sumitomo Corporation, have signed an agreement to advance air mobility services in Japan. This partnership will utilize Archer’s electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, the Midnight, to introduce air taxi services in urban areas where traffic and geographic challenges limit conventional ground transportation. Soracle has secured the right to order up to 100 of these aircraft, amounting to a potential $500 million investment. The initiative aims to develop new flight routes across major cities and tourist destinations such as Tokyo, Osaka, and Okinawa, enhancing both local and visitor travel experiences.

A key aspect of this collaboration involves working closely with the Japanese Civil Aviation Bureau (JCAB) for necessary certifications, with discussions already in progress. This move aligns with Japan’s progressive approach to transportation and sustainability. The partnership will debut with a public flight demonstration at the upcoming World Expo, a significant international event expected to draw millions of attendees. The Midnight aircraft is designed for safety, efficiency, and minimal noise, capable of speeds up to 150 mph and supporting consecutive short flights with quick recharging. The project signifies a shared commitment to revolutionizing transport, offering a modern, eco-friendly alternative to ground travel.
