Toyota Motor Corporation recently announced the completion of Phase 1 construction of its ambitious Woven City project, which is envisioned as a testbed for future mobility. Initially conceived at CES 2018 and unveiled in detail at CES 2020, the Woven City embodies Toyota’s transition into a mobility company and showcases its commitment to societal advancement. Designed in collaboration with Woven by Toyota (WbyT), this experimental urban space will serve as a hub for innovation where inventors—ranging from Toyota affiliates to startups and research institutions—can collaborate to develop and test transformative products and services. Leveraging Toyota’s manufacturing expertise and WbyT’s software capabilities, Woven City aims to tackle societal challenges and redefine value creation.
A core feature of Woven City is its collaborative environment, which integrates inventors with residents and visitors, collectively known as “Weavers.” This community-centered approach focuses on co-creation to expand the concept of mobility beyond transportation, encompassing the movement of goods, energy, and information. The project will welcome approximately 100 initial residents by fall 2025, primarily Toyota and WbyT staff, gradually scaling to 360 residents in Phase 1 and eventually reaching 2,000 across all phases. Additionally, an accelerator program launching in summer 2025 will invite startups, universities, and research institutions to contribute to the city’s innovation ecosystem. Public involvement will commence in FY2026, offering broader participation in shaping Woven City’s vision of a more interconnected society.
Beyond mobility, Woven City underscores Toyota’s broader goals of fostering well-being and advancing human-centered solutions. The project emphasizes collaboration to address global challenges and inspire technological breakthroughs, with initiatives extending even to space exploration. For example, WbyT’s investment in Interstellar Technologies reflects its ambition to leverage Toyota’s engineering expertise for rocket mass production. With its innovative spirit and expansive aspirations, Woven City seeks to redefine how people live, move, and thrive, positioning itself as a blueprint for a more sustainable and integrated future.
