Kia Boosts EVs with Smart Charge & V2H Services

Kia is making significant advancements in electric vehicle (EV) energy management by introducing smart charging and Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) services.

Kia is making significant advancements in electric vehicle (EV) energy management by introducing smart charge and Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) services in select regions of Europe and the United States. This initiative is part of Hyundai Motor Group’s broader goal of integrating Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) services, transforming EVs into more than just transportation tools. By focusing on smart energy solutions, Kia aims to enhance the efficiency of EV usage, reduce energy costs for consumers, and improve overall energy resilience. These new services represent a shift toward a future where electric vehicles are not only vehicles but also valuable components of the energy grid.

The Smart Charging service, launched in the Netherlands, is designed to help EV car owners reduce charging expenses by taking advantage of fluctuating electricity rates. Through the Kia Smart Charge app, EV users can optimize their charging schedule to benefit from lower electricity prices, making EV ownership more cost-effective. This service is compatible with any home charger and allows seamless coordination between the vehicle and the energy provider. Furthermore, Kia plans to introduce a Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) feature later in the year, enabling EV owners to sell excess energy back to the grid, creating a more dynamic and efficient energy exchange system.

In the United States, Kia’s V2H service is being introduced in seven states, including California, providing EV owners with a reliable emergency power source during outages. By utilizing stored energy in the vehicle, homeowners can reduce disruptions and manage energy costs more effectively. Kia is also working with utilities in California to expand its V2G program, reinforcing its commitment to making EVs integral to the energy ecosystem. Through these initiatives, Kia is positioning itself as a leader in sustainable and connected mobility, ensuring that EV technology continues to evolve beyond transportation and into the realm of smart energy solutions.
