High-Voltage Photorelay in a Compact Package

Toshiba has introduced the TLX9161T, an automotive photorelay. It supports high-voltage automotive batteries with an outstanding minimum output withstand voltage of 1500V. The TLX9161T is a miniaturized evolution of the previous TLX9160T model. It fits into the smaller SO12L-T package, which reduces the mounting area by about 25%. This compact package enables more efficient use of space on printed circuit boards, facilitating a reduction in both the size and cost of Battery Management Systems.

Advanced Safety and Compliance Features

The new photorelay is built with a resin that exceeds a Comparative Tracking Index (CTI) of 600. It basically aligns with Material Group I standards under the international IEC 60664-1 standard, one of the stringent requirements for high-voltage components in automotive settings. Its pin configuration also maintains a creepage distance greater than 5mm. That ensures compliance with isolation requirements and supporting safe operation at voltages up to 1000V. Additionally, the photorelay can withstand high isolation voltage with a rating of 5000Vrms minimum.

Applications and Benefits in Electric Vehicles

Toshiba’s TLX9161T is primarily targeted for use within automotive Battery Management Systems, aiding voltage monitoring, mechanical relay failure detection, and ground fault detection. It acts as an electrical isolation device, replacing bulky mechanical relays to improve reliability and efficiency. Its compact size and high voltage tolerance make it well-suited for modern electric vehicle requirements, directly contributing to safer and more efficient battery management.

This product launch marks Toshiba’s ongoing effort to expand its automotive photorelay portfolio aimed at overcoming the technical obstacles in electric vehicle proliferation. By advancing compact, high-performance components, Toshiba supports the automotive industry’s goal of expanding EV adoption while contributing to the ambitious global objective of achieving a carbon-neutral society. This aligns with the broader context where efficient, reliable battery systems are fundamental to reducing emissions and fostering more sustainable transportation alternatives.
