Boosting Efficiency: AOS Gen3 1200V SiC MOSFETs

Alpha and Omega Semiconductor (AOS) has announced its latest innovation: the Gen3 1200V αSiC MOSFETs.

The Rising Demand for High-Efficiency Power Devices

As the global shift toward electrification accelerates, the demand for high-performance power solutions is increasing rapidly. Key industries such as electric vehicles (EVs), renewable energy, and artificial intelligence (AI) data centers are placing heavy emphasis on power conversion efficiency and reliability. With more systems transitioning to high-voltage designs, wide bandgap semiconductors like silicon carbide (SiC) are becoming essential. SiC-based components offer superior thermal and electrical properties, allowing for higher efficiency and reduced energy losses. These advantages make them ideal for next-generation electric mobility, sustainable energy, and high-compute environments.

AOS Unveils Gen3 1200V αSiC MOSFETs for Advanced Applications

Alpha and Omega Semiconductor (AOS) has announced its latest innovation: the Gen3 1200V αSiC MOSFETs. These next-generation devices significantly enhance efficiency in high-power systems. Compared to their predecessors, they deliver up to a 30% improvement in switching figure-of-merit (FOM), while preserving low conduction losses under high load. Ruggedness and long-term reliability remain top priorities, as demonstrated by AEC-Q101 automotive qualification and extended HV-H3TRB compliance. These advancements make Gen3 MOSFETs an ideal choice for today’s demanding power designs.

Electric Vehicles and AI Systems Gain Efficiency Boost

Electric vehicles particularly benefit from these Gen3 αSiC MOSFETs. They enable engineers to design compact, high-efficiency powertrains with greater power density, directly improving range and reducing battery usage. Similarly, AI data centers using 800V or ±400V high-voltage DC (HVDC) systems will see reduced losses and higher energy efficiency. These devices are essential for supporting the evolving topologies and increasing power needs of modern electric systems, offering a scalable and sustainable path forward.

Expanding Product Portfolio and Industry Impact

The new Gen3 MOSFETs come in multiple variants, ranging from 15mΩ to 40mΩ in a TO27-4L package. AOS is planning to extend the lineup to include surface mount and topside-cooled packages, as well as case modules for industrial use. The company has also introduced a larger 11mΩ die variant, tailored for high-power EV traction inverters and available as wafers for custom integration. With a clear focus on innovation and environmental responsibility, AOS is positioning itself at the forefront of the power semiconductor industry.
