A group of eight media representatives embarked on a challenging journey from Kiruna, Sweden, to Mehamn. Norway—a remote fishing village that houses the world’s northernmost fast-charging station. The trip covered 1,500 km through icy roads, snow-covered landscapes, and extreme temperatures, showcasing the performance of Porsche’s all-electric Macan and Taycan Cross Turismo. This ambitious journey highlights the growing accessibility of EV charging infrastructure even in the harshest climates.

Real-World EV Performance in Freezing Conditions

Unlike controlled tests, this road trip took place under realistic winter driving conditions. With temperatures dropping as low as -10°C, the media representatives drove as fast as road conditions allowed, with heating set for maximum comfort. Porsche’s built-in Charging Planner efficiently calculated charging stops without imposing strict limitations. Demonstrating how EVs can travel long distances even in extreme cold. The first charging stop didn’t come until Kautokeino, Norway, proving the impressive range of these vehicles. EV charging in cold environments often raises concerns about range loss and slow charging speeds. But Porsche’s advanced thermal management and heat pump technology ensured seamless operation.

Challenging Terrain and Reliable Charging Infrastructure

The journey’s latter stages tested the traction and stability of electric AWD vehicles on icy and snow-covered roads. Equipped with standard winter tires, the Macan and Taycan models handled the treacherous roads with ease. The final stretch along FV888, a scenic yet hazardous road, demonstrated the vehicles’ ability to maintain control despite rapid freezing conditions. Upon arrival in Mehamn, the convoy successfully plugged into a Kople fast charger with up to 175 kW output. Proving that fast-charging stations are becoming more accessible, even in the most remote Arctic regions.
