Ricardo Develops Sustainable, Rare Earth-Free Electric Motor

Ricardo has successfully developed and tested an innovative electric propulsion motor, Alumotor.

Innovative Electric Motor Technology for a Greener Future

Ricardo, a global engineering and environmental consulting firm, has successfully developed and tested an innovative electric propulsion motor, Alumotor. This breakthrough design eliminates rare earth elements and copper, which manufacturers traditionally use in electric motors. The project, supported by Innovate UK, aims to reduce the environmental impact of electric vehicle production. With sustainability at its core, Alumotor provides an eco-friendly, cost-effective alternative to conventional electric motors, addressing global concerns over the supply and environmental effects of critical raw materials.

High-Performance Design with Aluminium Hairpin Windings

Alumotor introduces a novel approach by utilizing aluminium hairpin windings instead of copper, making it a more sustainable option. Additionally, the oil-cooled motor delivers optimal performance with a power output of 214kW and an efficiency exceeding 92%. Its design makes it highly suitable for light commercial vehicles and off-highway applications while allowing flexibility for other uses. According to Dr. Dragica Kostic-Perovic, Ricardo’s Chief Engineer, this pioneering technology positions the company at the forefront of sustainable electric propulsion solutions. By proving strong performance data, Ricardo strengthens its role as a leader in the development of next-generation green technologies.

Showcasing Sustainability in the UK Supply Chain

The importance of reducing reliance on critical raw materials is increasingly recognized, given their environmental and social impact. Ricardo actively works across the entire value chain to minimize these effects, including policy development, strategic planning, and circular economy applications. The Alumotor project was highlighted at the UKRI-organized Materials and Manufacturing Showcase 2025 in London, where experts discussed sustainable supply chain solutions. This initiative underscores Ricardo’s commitment to revolutionizing electric motor design and paving the way for a cleaner, more sustainable future.
