BMS is an important component in electric vehicles that controls the voltage, current, temperature, etc. of the battery to improve its performance and lifespan. According to a statement from LG Innotek, the company announced that it has developed a wireless BMS system that significantly improves battery performance.
The most important advantage of a wireless BMS is that it contributes to reducing the weight of the vehicles in which the BMS is installed. By eliminating the cables that need to be attached to the BMS, the weight of the vehicle is reduced by up to 90 kg. The elimination of dozens of cables required for the BMS not only reduces the weight of the vehicle, but also allows the battery to be produced in smaller sizes. The space saved also means that the battery capacity can be increased, which means longer distances can be traveled.
LG Innotek’s new wireless BMS supports 800V, the highest voltage of any commercially available BMS. The company had developed an 800V wired BMS in 2020. According to the company, there is a trend for automakers to adopt 800V in their electric vehicles as charging times decrease when the voltage increases.
