Dongfeng’s 1.5 MW Charger Signals a Bigger EV Push

Dongfeng has stepped deeper into ultra-fast EV charging with a 1,500-kW in-house charger. The move puts the automaker directly against BYD’s flash-charging push while pointing to a broader high-voltage strategy.

Dongfeng’s new charger

Dongfeng rolled out prototype units at its Global Innovation Center on July 29. The company paired the charger launch with a kilovolt e-drive prototype, showing a wider electrification roadmap.

The new charging pile delivers a peak of 1,500 kW through a single gun. It supports an ultra-wide voltage range from 150 V to 1,000 V, with efficiency at 96.7% or higher.

Flexible power

The charger is not only about headline-grabbing power. Dongfeng says the system can serve both passenger and commercial vehicles, and the cabinet layout can expand installed power to 2.4 MW and beyond.

That flexibility matters because charging demand is becoming more diverse. Passenger cars, heavy-duty vehicles, and future high-voltage platforms all need different power profiles, so modular infrastructure may become more important than raw peak output alone.

Dongfeng in the competition

Dongfeng’s 1,500-kW figure matches the highest mass-produced single-gun level now seen in China. That places it in the same conversation as BYD’s second-generation flash charger, which helped define the current benchmark.

The competition is clearly accelerating. Chinese automakers are now pushing charging times into territory that once sounded unrealistic, with multiple brands targeting dramatically shorter stop times and higher voltage compatibility.

Technical direction

Dongfeng’s charging plan goes beyond one product. The company says it is developing a next-generation ultra-fast charger with integrated energy storage, forming a product matrix from 720 kW to 2.4 MW.

The company also appears to be aligning charging hardware with future vehicle architecture. Its kilovolt e-drive uses a 1,500 V-rated SiC power module, supports 450 V to 1,000 V, and is compatible with mainstream 800 V platforms.

Broader EV strategy

This launch fits a much larger technology roadmap. Dongfeng has also discussed solid-state batteries, 1,200-volt platforms, and very high charging rates that could support long-range EVs and faster replenishment in the coming years.

That broader direction suggests Dongfeng wants control over the full stack. Instead of focusing only on vehicles, the company is building the charging, power electronics, and battery systems that support them.
