Revolutionizing Commercial EVs with ZF’s Oil-Free e-Comp Scroll Compressor

Electric vehicle (EV) technology is rapidly advancing, especially within the commercial sector. As global regulations push for cleaner transport, manufacturers are innovating to overcome technical barriers. One such challenge is integrating reliable, quiet, and maintenance-friendly components into electrified trucks and buses. Air compressors, critical for braking and suspension systems, are now being redesigned for electric mobility. ZF Group has taken a major step forward in this space, unveiling a groundbreaking oil-free air compressor tailored for hybrid, battery-electric, and hydrogen-powered commercial vehicles.

ZF’s e-Comp Scroll: Quiet, Oil-Free Solution for Air Compression Needs

At the ACT Expo in California and Auto Shanghai in China, ZF Commercial Vehicle Solutions (CVS) introduced its latest product: the e-Comp Scroll air compressor. Designed specifically for electric commercial vehicles, this compressor offers an oil-free, low-vibration solution with minimal noise—only about 67 dB(A), which is comparable to a typical office environment. Unlike traditional piston-driven compressors, the e-Comp Scroll uses interlocking scroll technology to compress air more quietly and efficiently, improving comfort for both drivers and nearby pedestrians.

Enhanced Efficiency and Sustainability for Zero-Emission Fleets

One of the most impressive features of the e-Comp Scroll is its ability to support diverse commercial vehicle applications. With a system pressure of up to 12.5 bar and adaptive speed control, it meets a wide range of operational demands. More importantly, it operates without oil, reducing maintenance costs, eliminating oil disposal, and contributing to cleaner operations. Its integrated inverter and liquid cooling system keep temperatures below 90°C, therefore ensuring consistent performance even under high loads. The automatic shut-off between compression cycles also improves energy efficiency.

Supporting the EV Transition with Smart, Scalable Technology

According to ZF leadership, the e-Comp Scroll reflects a holistic approach to commercial vehicle electrification. It not only meets performance needs but also aligns with environmental goals by helping fleets lower their total cost of ownership (TCO). As the commercial vehicle industry transitions to electric mobility, components like ZF’s e-Comp Scroll will play a key role in delivering quiet, clean, and sustainable transport solutions. This innovation highlights ZF’s expanding portfolio of next-generation EV components built to support zero-emission transportation worldwide.
