The P70X is designed to bridge lithium-ion batteries and supercapacitors. Molicel says it keeps battery-style energy storage while approaching capacitor-style pulse response.

That matters because hybrids need repeated bursts of power and rapid energy recovery. They also need those events to happen many times without major performance loss.

Cell architecture

The cell uses a 21700 cylindrical format and sits inside Molicel’s PX series. The company presents it as an automotive cell aimed at high-frequency power demand, not as a general-purpose battery.

Molicel says the P70X delivers 7,000 mAh capacity and 340 Wh/kg energy density. It also supports 30C continuous discharge, which points to strong sustained current capability.

Supercapacitor behavior

The most striking claim is the sub-200-microsecond power-switching time. Molicel says that response lets the cell ramp into high power almost instantly.

That response is why the company compares the cell to a supercapacitor. In practical use, it helps a hybrid handle sudden acceleration support and abrupt regenerative braking with less lag.

The cell also delivers 900 W peak power for five seconds. That gives it a short, intense reserve for overtaking, launch support, and energy capture.

Material and heat control

Molicel says the PX series uses advanced single-crystal technology. The company claims that this reduces exothermal heat release by nearly 50% versus traditional polycrystalline materials.

Lower heat matters because high-power cells usually face thermal stress. Better heat behavior can support consistency during repeated high-current pulses.

The company also says the platform passed UL9540A thermal runaway evaluation. That makes the safety claim part of the product’s automotive value proposition.

Lifecycle and durability

Molicel reports 96% capacity retention after 1,000,000 cycles under a supercapacitor-style test profile. The test profile reflects shallow, rapid cycling rather than deep discharge behavior.

That is especially relevant for hybrids, which cycle far more often than many BEV packs. So the cell is not just about peak power; it is also about endurance under pulse-heavy operation.

Why hybrids benefit

Hybrids need batteries that react quickly and recover quickly. They do not always need maximum range, but they do need high-frequency power support and efficient braking recovery.

The P70X fits that need by combining battery energy density with capacitor-like responsiveness. That makes it more relevant for hybrid powertrains than for range-first battery electric platforms.
