Hyundai Mobis has made a significant leap in electric vehicle (EV) safety technology by unveiling a battery system with a built-in fire extinguishing mechanism. As EV adoption accelerates globally, so does the demand for safer and more reliable battery systems. This innovative system from Hyundai Mobis directly addresses that need. Unlike traditional designs that only delay thermal runaway using heat-resistant materials, this solution goes further by actively preventing it. The built-in fire extinguishing feature responds within five minutes of ignition, aligning with and potentially exceeding regulatory requirements in major global markets such as Europe, China, and India.

Proactive Fire Prevention with Advanced Hardware and Software

The newly developed Battery System Assembly (BSA) integrates a battery management system (BMS), custom hardware, and cutting-edge software. Real-time monitoring sensors assess temperature, voltage, and internal pressure to detect anomalies. If a risk is identified, the system accurately locates the potential fire point and activates the extinguishing mechanism immediately. This intelligent response is powered by a robust decision-making algorithm that prioritizes speed and precision. Additionally, the fire extinguishing agent used is eco-friendly and non-toxic, boasting five times the capacity of a standard home fire extinguisher. The fire safety innovation is further supported by three patent applications that cover design elements such as agent piping and high-pressure spraying technology.

Innovations Driving Global Safety Standards Forward

Hyundai Mobis is not stopping at extinguishing fires. The company is also working on a new thermal management material called the pulsating heat pipe. Made from an aluminum alloy and refrigerant, it helps control internal battery temperature, especially during rapid charging. This reinforces the brand’s holistic approach to battery safety. According to Park Yong Jun, Vice President of the Battery System R&D Group, Hyundai Mobis aims to integrate hardware and software solutions to exceed evolving international safety standards. These advancements position Hyundai Mobis as a front-runner in EV battery innovation and underscore its commitment to shaping the future of safe and sustainable mobility.
