Nexteer Automotive launched its High Mount Direct Drive Steer-by-Wire Hand-Wheel Actuator, called HMDD. This compact architecture supports software-defined vehicle cockpits with greater packaging freedom. It combines a high-mount motor location, direct-drive responsiveness, and a stationary hub for improved integration.

The system translates driver inputs into digital commands for the road wheels. It also delivers adjustable steering feel feedback to the driver through software. OEMs can pair HMDD with Nexteer’s low-mount option under the dash for flexible strategies.

Cockpit Design Freedom and Packaging Benefits

HMDD creates new space around the driver by moving the actuator higher behind the dashboard. This shift reduces under-dash volume and supports flatter floor designs. Interior teams gain more room for storage, screens, and reconfigurable seating layouts.

Designers can explore center-hub controls and displays within the steering interface. Stowable or reconfigurable steering wheels become practical with this compact architecture. Expanded placement options support left- and right-hand-drive configurations across platforms.

Next-Generation Airbag Integration and Safety

The stationary hub removes the need for symmetric airbags required by rotating columns. This change enables new airbag shapes and integration methods for modern cabins. Safety teams can tailor restraint systems to specific cockpit layouts and user profiles.

HMDD builds on redundant electrical and software architectures for functional safety. The design targets ISO 26262 ASIL D compliance with dual controllers and power paths. Backup actuation paths maintain steering function within milliseconds after a single fault.

Mass Reduction and Efficiency Gains

Nexteer reports mass reduction opportunities of up to 23 percent versus legacy column systems. Actual savings depend on vehicle application, packaging, and integration choices. Fewer mechanical parts also reduce friction losses and improve thermal behavior.

The direct-drive motor delivers high torque with lower current draw in many cases. This efficiency supports both 12V and 48V electrical architectures across powertrains. Thermal management improves as heat sources move away from footwell areas.

Scalable Integration Across Powertrains

HMDD scales across internal combustion, hybrid, and electric vehicle platforms with ease. Support for 12V and 48V systems simplifies hardware standardization across model lines. OEMs can deploy one actuator family while tuning steering feel through software.

Standardized hardware reduces part complexity and accelerates development cycles for new models. Software-defined features allow brand differentiation without major mechanical changes. Over-the-air updates can refine steering modes as strategies evolve over time.

Steering Feel and Driver Experience

Drivers receive smooth, direct torque response that feels natural and connected to the road. Adjustable modes let users select comfort, sport, or efficiency-oriented steering characteristics. Haptic feedback algorithms simulate realistic road textures and tire behavior.

Software tuning enables adaptive steering ratios based on speed and driving conditions. This balance supports agile handling at low speeds and stable behavior at high speeds. Future feature evolution can arrive through OTA updates as OEM software matures.

Motion-by-Wire Strategy and SDV Enablement

HMDD strengthens Nexteer’s Motion-by-Wire portfolio for coordinated chassis control. The strategy spans steering, braking, rear-wheel steering, and software-enabled motion functions. Combined systems advance safety, performance, and efficiency beyond mechanical limits.

Steer-by-wire replaces mechanical links with electronic signals and actuators for flexible layouts. This transition supports higher levels of assisted and automated driving with redundant paths. Nexteer’s production experience includes the world’s first full drive-by-wire passenger vehicle.

Development Status and Industry Recognition

Nexteer’s HMDD was named a finalist for the 2026 Automotive News PACE Pilot Award. The award recognizes pre-commercial innovations with strong market relevance and technical merit. This validation highlights the actuator’s potential for near-term adoption by OEMs.

The company continues to expand steer-by-wire deployments with global and domestic manufacturers. Partners include BMW, Ford, GM, Stellantis, Toyota, VW, and leading Chinese NEV brands. HMDD fits within a broader roadmap toward software-defined chassis architectures.
