The vehicle is sold in China as the Tang L. In Europe, BYD positions it as a seven-seat flagship SUV with a strong focus on charging speed, interior space, and long-distance usability.

A New Flagship for Europe

The Atto 8 expands BYD’s European SUV line-up above the Atto 2, Atto 3, Sealion 5, and Seal U. BYD presented the model during the Paris show, which runs from October 12 to October 18, 2026.

Stella Li, BYD’s executive vice president, presented the vehicle. She described the Atto 8 as an example of BYD’s effort to move research and development into production vehicles that improve everyday electric mobility.

The SUV will be offered in two fully electric versions. Buyers will choose between rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive, with different output levels and driving characteristics.

European sales are scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2027. BYD has not yet announced pricing for the Atto 8 in European markets.

Flash Charging Is the Central Feature

Flash Charging is the most important technical addition. The Atto 8 is the first BYD vehicle in Europe to use the company’s second-generation Blade Battery and support this charging system.

The 115-kWh battery can recover from 10% to 70% state of charge in five minutes. BYD says the same pack can rise from 10% to 97% in nine minutes.

Cold weather adds limited charging time. At minus 30 degrees Celsius, BYD states that the battery needs 12 minutes to charge from 20% to 97%.

BYD summarizes the capability as “Ready in 5, Full in 9, Cold Add 3.” The final phrase refers to the additional three minutes required in extreme cold.

The system is based on BYD’s Megawatt Flash Charging technology. BYD says its charging hardware can deliver up to 1,500 kW through a single cable under the Chinese-market connector specification.

However, the European charging power and connector configuration for the Atto 8 have not been detailed in the European launch material. Buyers should therefore treat the 1,500 kW figure as a technology capability rather than a confirmed European site specification.

Charging Network Plans

Infrastructure remains central to the technology’s value. BYD plans to expand its European Flash Charging network to 3,000 stations by the end of 2027.

The CarNewsChina report states that BYD plans 6,000 Flash Chargers outside China by the same deadline. This figure is broader than BYD’s European announcement, which specifically covers 3,000 European stations.

The two statements are not necessarily contradictory. One may refer to Europe alone, while the other may include additional overseas markets. Still, BYD’s European release provides the clearer, region-specific commitment.

BYD has also outlined a much larger Chinese deployment. The company plans 20,000 Flash Charging stations in China by the end of 2026, alongside a global rollout.

Battery and Driving Range

The Atto 8 uses a 115-kWh second-generation Blade Battery. BYD says this is the first European application of the updated battery and Flash Charging combination.

The rear-wheel-drive Design version offers up to 653 km of combined WLTP range. BYD says this is sufficient for a Paris-to-Frankfurt journey without a charging stop.

The all-wheel-drive Excellence version trades some efficiency for performance. It retains the same 115-kWh battery but offers up to 602 km of combined WLTP range.

These figures place the Atto 8 among the longer-range seven-seat electric SUVs announced for Europe. However, real-world range will depend on temperature, speed, load, tire choice, and use of climate control.

Powertrain Options

The Design RWD variant uses a single rear motor. It produces 340 kW, equal to 462 hp, and 365 Nm of torque.

This version accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.0 seconds. It is therefore aimed at efficiency, range, and everyday usability rather than outright acceleration.

The Excellence AWD adds a front motor. Combined system output rises to 570 kW, or 775 PS, with 775 Nm of torque.

BYD says the AWD version completes the 0–100 km/h sprint in 4.6 seconds. CarNewsChina converts this output to 764 hp, while BYD’s European release uses 775 PS; the figures describe the same metric in different units.

Size, Seating, and Packaging

The Atto 8 is a genuinely large SUV. It measures 5,040 mm long, 1,996 mm wide, and 1,760 mm high.

Its wheelbase is 2,950 mm. That length supports a three-row cabin with a 2+3+2 seating layout in Europe.

The third row remains usable even when erected. With all seats in place, the SUV still provides 270 liters of luggage capacity.

Folding the second and third rows increases cargo volume to as much as 1,960 liters. The vehicle also has a 136-liter front trunk under the hood.

The frunk can be opened with a double-tap function. BYD additionally offers a projection-activated power tailgate, according to the CarNewsChina.

Interior and Comfort Equipment

The cabin is designed around seven occupants. A 2.39-square-meter panoramic glass roof increases the sense of space and brings more natural light into the interior.

Both versions include a 10.25-inch digital instrument display. They also feature a 26-inch widescreen head-up display and a 15.6-inch central touchscreen.

Integrated Google functions provide access to Google Maps, Google Assistant, and the Google Play Store. This suggests a software-focused cockpit, although market-specific availability may vary.

Front seats come with heating, ventilation, and massage functions. The outer second-row seats receive the same comfort features.

Third-row passengers get adjustable headrests and a separate climate control interface. A standard three-zone automatic climate system allows individual temperature settings across the cabin.

The Design RWD version has a ten-speaker audio system. The Excellence AWD upgrades to BYD’s DiSound system with 21 speakers.

A front compartment can cool contents to minus 6 degrees Celsius or heat them to 50 degrees Celsius. This adds practical value for families, long trips, and outdoor use.

Connectivity and Everyday Charging

The Atto 8 includes extensive device-charging provision. It offers two 50 W wireless smartphone chargers and several USB-C ports.

The front row receives two 60 W USB-C connections. Rear passengers get one 18 W and one 60 W USB-C port.

This equipment reflects a broader trend in premium electric SUVs. Manufacturers increasingly treat in-cabin power delivery as a core convenience feature rather than an optional extra.

Design and Aerodynamics

BYD describes the exterior as an evolution of its current design language. Slim integrated daytime running lights and matrix LED headlights define the front end.

A pronounced front bumper gives the SUV a wide stance. Along the sides, a character line above the front doors continues into a shoulder line that extends toward the rear wheels.

At the rear, the lights use a traditional Chinese knot-inspired motif. An illuminated BYD logo connects them across the tailgate.

BYD says the rear spoiler and sculpted rear bodywork guide airflow. The company links these measures to improved aerodynamic efficiency and greater range.

Market Position and Pricing Context

BYD has not published a European price for the Atto 8. Its positioning will therefore depend heavily on the final market-specific equipment and trim structure.

CarNewsChina notes that BYD’s current European seven-seater, the Tang EV, was listed at 75,000 euros in Germany. It also reports that BYD’s official website later showed a reduced Tang price of 47,990 euros.

In China, the Tang L EV is priced between 222,800 and 272,800 yuan. CarNewsChina converts this range to approximately 33,290 to 40,765 US dollars.

Those Chinese prices cannot be transferred directly to Europe. Taxes, import duties, homologation costs, equipment differences, and local competition all affect final European pricing.

Chinese Market Performance

The Atto 8’s Chinese counterpart has faced a difficult sales period. CarNewsChina reports that BYD delivered 4,426 Tang L units in China from January to August 2026.

That total represents an 87.5% year-over-year decline. The report does not provide a reason for the drop, so it should not be interpreted as evidence about European demand.

The European version differs in an important respect. It adds a third row of seats, whereas the Chinese model is offered with five seats.

How It Compares

BYD calls the Atto 8 the most powerful seven-seat SUV in Europe. The claim refers to its 570 kW combined peak output in Excellence AWD form.

Power alone does not make it the quickest seven-seater. CarNewsChina points out that the Audi SQ7 reaches 100 km/h in 4.1 seconds, faster than the Atto 8’s 4.6-second time.

The Atto 8’s stronger argument is its combination of attributes. It offers seven seats, a large battery, rapid charging, long WLTP range, and a premium-level cabin.

Flash Charging Matters

The Atto 8 matters because it moves Flash Charging from a technology showcase into BYD’s mainstream European model range. The DENZA Z9GT previously introduced the system to Europe, but the Atto 8 brings it to a BYD-branded, seven-seat family SUV.

The vehicle also addresses two common objections to large electric SUVs: charging time and interior practicality. Its nine-minute 10–97% charging claim, if replicated under suitable infrastructure conditions, could reduce one of the main friction points in long-distance electric travel.

The remaining question is deployment. Fast vehicle-side capability only delivers its full benefit when high-power chargers are available along the routes customers actually drive.

BYD’s planned 3,000 European Flash Charging stations will therefore be as important as the Atto 8 itself. The SUV’s commercial success will depend on both the vehicle’s price and the pace of that infrastructure rollout.
