AEM Unveils Titan Heavy-Duty Motor at IAA 2026

AEM launches Titan, its largest rare-earth-free HDRM motor, plus an air-cooled drive system at IAA Transportation 2026.

Titan motor: next step in AEM’s heavy-duty strategy

Titan extends AEM’s commercial vehicle motor roadmap. It sits above the current HDRM150 and HDRM300C models in output class. The company calls Titan the next evolution of its heavy-duty electric motor technology. It delivers significantly higher torque for larger powertrain needs.

AEM has not released exact power or torque figures before the show. Specific performance data will likely emerge during or after IAA. Visitors in Hanover will see a detailed 3D concept of Titan on AEM’s stand. This early look precedes first samples arriving in the third quarter of 2027.

Where Titan fits in the HDRM lineup

AEM’s HDRM family already serves trucks, buses, and off-highway machines. The range includes the HDRM150 auxiliary drive and the HDRM300C traction motor. The HDRM300C reaches up to 580 kW peak power and 2,900 Nm peak torque. It uses water/glycol cooling and enters production in 2026.

Titan supersedes this output class with higher torque capability. It keeps the same rare-earth-free design philosophy across the family.

Rare-earth-free design and supply-chain resilience

AEM’s motors avoid rare earth magnets entirely. They rely on switched reluctance and proprietary rotor-stator architectures. This approach reduces exposure to volatile rare earth supply chains. It also supports more straightforward recycling at end of life.

The company holds 46 international patents around its motor designs. These cover unique topologies and manufacturing methods.

Compressed aluminum coils and material choices

AEM replaces traditional copper windings with compressed aluminum coils in some designs. This shift targets lower cost and lighter weight. Steel and aluminum dominate the active material set in these motors. The architecture avoids neodymium-iron-boron magnets common in many EV motors.

Such material choices matter as export curbs disrupt magnet supplies. Recent restrictions have already affected production at some global automakers.

Integrated air-cooled drive system for off-highway use

Alongside Titan, AEM will show a new integrated air-cooled electric drive system. This package pairs the HDRM150 motor with a matched air-cooled inverter. The system operates at up to 700 V and delivers over 30 kW peak output. It functions as a drop-in solution for ancillary and off-highway applications.

By removing liquid cooling circuits, the design cuts pumps, hoses, and plumbing. This simplifies integration and reduces maintenance needs.

HDRM150 variants and performance

The HDRM150 family includes air-cooled and water-cooled versions. The air-cooled HDRM150TC reaches 32 kW peak and 60 Nm peak torque. It weighs 29.5 kg and runs up to 8,400 rpm. The unit carries IP6K9K ingress protection and CE marking for serial production.

Water-cooled HDRM150 concepts target higher continuous power. These variants aim at light commercial vehicles and trailer-driven systems.

IAA 2026 showcase and partnership with SAF-HOLLAND

AEM will host visitors on at IAA Transportation 2026. The event runs from September 15 to 20 in Hanover. Attendees can speak with product experts and view 3D models of Titan. Technical specifications and interviews will be available on request.

AEM’s technology also appears on the SAF-HOLLAND stand. There, a TRAKr e-axle uses an HDRM150 as a generator for regenerative energy recovery.

Role in commercial vehicle electrification

IAA Transportation gathers global truck, bus, and trailer manufacturers. AEM uses this stage to introduce its newest heavy-duty motor platform. The company says it has strengthened its product portfolio since the last edition. It has also secured contracts with several multinational businesses.

Titan and the air-cooled drive system reflect this expanded offering. Both aim to simplify electrification for demanding commercial applications.

Investment, production timeline, and market outlook

AEM recently announced a £16 million business investment. This funding supports development of its rare-earth-free electric powertrain technologies. The capital helps scale the HDRM family for commercial vehicles. It also backs the SSRD motor line aimed at passenger car programs.

First Titan samples are due in Q3 2027, with validation testing to follow. Volume availability for OEM truck programs likely lands between 2028 and 2030.

Positioning against magnet-based competitors

Many rival motors still rely on rare earth permanent magnets. These designs often deliver high torque density but face material risks. AEM’s magnet-free path trades some peak torque density for supply resilience. It also targets lower total cost of ownership over the vehicle life.

As export curbs tighten, OEMs may value this trade-off more highly. Titan’s arrival aligns with that shifting risk calculus.
